This song is heartache. It is framed around a fairly typical story of a romance that couldn't last, but the underlying theme that developed for me as I was writing is my disillusionment with the spiritual world as my natural skepticism kicked in throughout my life. A lot of people think that people become skeptics because they like to ruin other peoples' fun (and maybe sometimes that happens). For me, it was a long journey where I tried on many religions and philosophies, enjoying the aesthetics, but ultimately finding that they just don't speak to me. It was a painful and often lonely transition, but ultimately it's who I am, regardless of how much easier it might be socially if I were to pretend to be spiritual.
