The melody for the chorus came to me one day, and required next to no effort to arrange, but finding a structure for the verses took a lot of time to craft, because the chord structure to the melody feels very cyclical and naturally wants to repeat forever. To break myself out of the loop, I decided to sit down and program Dex with a melody as it came to me, rather than try to write ahead of time. I wanted to let his voice inform the direction of the music, and I think it was a very successful experiment.

The lyrics were similarly disparate. I originally had the lyrics to the chorus come to me, and they just felt right, even though I still have no idea where the imagery comes from or why it feels so appropriate to me. The verses, on the other hand, were kind of a nightmare, and had to be crafted carefully because of the cerebral nature of the content. Ultimately I am quite pleased with how it came out, but there were times I wanted to throw the whole thing out and move on because I wasn't sure I would ever be able to say what I wanted.
